Summary of Role

The Carbon Project Development Team at Anthesis is at the forefront of developing and managing carbon offset projects in sectors such as renewable energy, waste management, agriculture, forestry, and Nature-Based Solutions. We support and guide project owners and developers throughout the entire project lifecycle, from inception to the issuance of carbon credits in compliance with official carbon standards.

As a Principal Carbon Project Developer, we are seeking candidates who possess both a passion for sustainability impact and a well-developed (applied) scientific foundation. You will join our dynamic Project Development team and contribute to the development and management of impactful carbon offset projects across diverse sectors.

Key Responsibilities

  • Implementation and Management of Offset Projects:
    • Conduct carbon feasibility studies;
    • Draft Project Design Documents (PDDs);
    • Determine emissions baselines and conduct surveys;
    • Manage validation, monitoring, reporting, and verification (MRV) activities under applicable carbon standards (e.g., Gold Standard, Verra’s VCS);
    • Conduct site visits, manage stakeholder engagements, and travel to project locations as needed;
    • Schedule technical reviews and quality checks;
    • Source and contract suitable offset projects to expand Anthesis’ project portfolio, including research, cross-checking qualifications under carbon standards, technical assessment, emission reduction estimates, project profitability/cash flow projections, additionality assessments, preparing presentations, writing reports, and drafting agreements;
    • Lead the definition and planning of content and structure to support the certification of projects, including work plans, schedules, budgets, and deliverables.
  • Networking and Relationship Management:
    • Be a key point of contact and maintain good relationships with team members, project owners, clients, verification bodies, stakeholders, and other counterparts;
    • Coach (junior) team members;
    • Develop and maintain a network of project developers, verification bodies (VVBs), and standard bodies (e.g., Gold Standard and Verra’s VCS);
    • Proactively network with relevant organizations, including potential project owners, technology providers, multilaterals, public and private entities, government agencies, and others;
    • Participate in industry events, provide presentations, and share knowledge with colleagues.
  • Knowledge and Expertise Development:
    • Keep up-to-date with knowledge on developments in the international carbon market and (inter-)national environmental policy;
    • Disseminate and anchor knowledge within the team and throughout Anthesis;
    • Develop and ensure expertise in one or more of the following areas: Nature-Based Solutions, Water Reduction/Avoidance of Methane Emissions.

Key Requirements, Skills Knowledge & Expertise

Key Requirements

  • Relevant bachelor’s or master’s degree;
  • At least 10 years of relevant work experience in carbon asset development with a proven track record in PDD writing, including managing the full validation, monitoring, verification, and issuance cycle;
  • Excellent knowledge of international carbon standards, VCS (Verra), Gold Standard for the Global Goals, and CDM, as well as the most common carbon methodologies;
  • Up-to-date knowledge of developments in the international carbon market and environmental policy, including Greenhouse Gas Protocol, corporate GHG inventory (including scopes 1, 2, and 3), Science-Based Targets, and Net Zero;
  • Empathetic team player capable of developing authentic, win-win relationships and implementing innovative solutions;
  • Entrepreneurial, self-propelling, and hands-on approach with the ability to adapt to different teams, stakeholders, and ways of working;
  • Analytical, structured, and project management-minded;
  • Commercial skills with good business sense, target-driven, and able to identify and seize opportunities in a challenging and competitive market environment;
  • Excellent oral and written skills in English; proficiency in Dutch or other languages (e.g., Spanish, French, Portuguese) is a plus.

Desirable Skills, Experience and Attributes

  • Evidenced GIS/remote sensing and data analysis qualities;
  • Strong proficiency in statistics and number crunching;
  • Interest in social aspects and stakeholder engagement.
