About the role

This is an excellent opportunity for a lawyer or legal professional to join ClientEarth’s Environmental Democracy team on a fixed-term contract (6 months), with a focus on Europe.

The Environmental Democracy team works for the correct implementation and enforcement of the ‘Aarhus Convention,’ that is, the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) Convention on Access to Information, Public Participation in Decision-making and Access to Justice in Environmental Matters – the most progressive international agreement for citizens’ rights to information and access to justice in Europe. The team aims to advance the principles of accountability, transparency, and responsiveness for the good governance of EU institutions and national public authorities.

Meet your Manager

In this role, you will be managed by Juliette Delarue. Juliette joined ClientEarth in 2018 and is based in Brussels. Juliette works on access to justice in the European Union by supporting ClientEarth’s litigation in a wide range of environmental areas. She has expertise in proceedings before the EU courts and internal review requests, as well as in Environmental Democracy matters more broadly.

Main Duties

  • Conduct legal research in relation to Environmental Democracy issues to inform the work of members of the team as well as other ClientEarth teams;
  • Draft advocacy materials and contribute to meetings with EU decision-makers;
  • Support the team in raising public awareness about the access rights provided by the Aarhus Convention through the organisation of events, trainings and printed materials. Draft parts of reports to funders and applications for new funding, as relevant.

Role requirements

  • A degree in law;
  • Professional experience working on EU law and policy;
  • Dedicated to working for the environment and in the public interest.

Note to candidates: We know that long lists of criteria can be daunting and that some candidates will not apply for a role unless they feel they are 100% qualified. If you feel you meet at least some of the essential criteria, we still encourage you to apply.
